While I’m a fan of the Griswold family and their escapades (particularly their first outing), I haven’t quite warmed up to the idea of a reboot in the franchise. Despite all that, news has broken that writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (of the hilarious Horrible Bosses) are working steadfast on their continuation of the franchise, simply titled Vacation. [The LA Times]

Last we heard, the film would focus on son Rusty Griswold, to be reprised by Anthony Michael Hall, rather than returning to parents Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, and would potentially be directed by producer David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers). That appears to have since changed, as the Times reports Peter Segal (50 First Dates, Get Smart) as a hopeful for the director’s chair.

Other than Goldstein and Daley’s eager intentions to make Rusty as “likable” an “everyman doofus” as his father, the news doesn’t inspire much confidence. Get Smart was enjoyable enough, I suppose, but Peter Segal isn’t exactly the first name that pops into my head when I think of comedy gold, never mind the fact that Anthony Michael Hall is no Chevy Chase. Regardless, New Line Cinema is ready to get their bags packed and the car started on this one.

How do you feel about another Vacation without Chase starring? Do you think Anthony Michael Hall can live up to it?
