If you live in New York City or Los Angeles and have yet to see Hayao Miyazaki‘s final film The Wind Rises in native Japanese with subtitles, you’ve unfortunately missed the boat until the film’s home video release. After finishing up last week’s Oscar-qualifying run, the film is undergoing the Disney treatment (aka getting an English dub track ahead of a February release, with actors who have yet to be announced), but today brings our first U.S. trailer.
Shorter than the four-minute international trailer and free of dialogue, it introduces our main character, Jirō Horikoshi, a man best-known for designing the Zero Fighter plane used in bombing Pearl Harbor, as well as the gorgeous animation. There’s also a handful of U.S. critic quotes, including David Ehrlich‘s Film.com review, in which he called it “perhaps the greatest animated film ever made.”
