After this year brought a trio of 2011 festival holdovers with Haywire, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and Perfect Sense, Ewan McGregor‘s major dramatic turn is only a few months away from hitting theaters. Starring alongside Naomi Watts, we loved Juan Antonio Bayona‘s tsunami drama The Impossible at Toronto and now a new UK trailer has arrive.

But before we get to that, Variety has news on one of his next projects. The actor has come aboard an Australian heist thriller Son of a Gun, which will be helmed by Julius Avery in his directorial feature debut. After winning a Cannes award for his short Jerrycan four years ago, he’s finally set for this project, which “follows the relationship between Australia’s public enemy number one, played by McGregor, and his young protege.” As production kicks off early next year, expect more news soon.

Below you can see the great new trailer for Impossible, which loses the oversentimental U2 track from the US version and adds some more footage of the disaster. Unfortunately it auto-plays, but we’ll update if a better embed comes along.

The Impossible arrives on December 21st.
