While there’s currently many rumors flying around about what may premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, 2016 also brings some hold-overs that premiered at last year’s festival. Joachim Trier‘s Louder Than Bombs, which also stopped by Toronto International Film Festival among others, will finally arrive this April. His follow-up to Oslo, August 31st, which earned a spot amongst our favorites of the decade thus far, features the ensemble of Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, Devin Druid, Rachel Brosnahan, David Strathairn, and Amy Ryan.

We said in our review, “Re-uniting with Eskil Vogt, Trier has left Norway with Louder than Bombs, moving stateside and tackling subjects whose grief doesn’t need legitimization: the members of a family torn apart by the sudden death of the mother. Disappointingly, despite the more direct points of access, the film lacks the complex characterizations and trenchant observational faculties that so distinguished its predecessors.”

Ahead of the U.S. release, check out the trailer and poster below.

On the eve of an exhibition honoring noted war photographer Isabelle Reed (Isabelle Huppert), whose career was cut short in the wake of her untimely death, a father and two sons grapple with her domestic and professional legacy. Flashbacks of Isabelle’s conflated role of wife, mother and photojournalist intermingle with the present-day attempts of the Reeds to manage their grief amid combat of a different kind. Family patriarch Gene (Gabriel Byrne) discovers secrets about his late spouse while pursuing a new romance and struggling to connect with teenage son Conrad (Devin Druid), who hides in video games and introspection. Adult son Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg) takes leave from academic and married life to organize his mother’s archive, only to slip into reckless behavior. Past and present coalesce in sharp focus as the surviving Reeds come to terms with love and loss — locating in memories both painful and joyous the skills they need to soldier on…
