With it being nearly 20 years since the release of Nintendo’s Virtual Boy, virtual reality has come a long way, as one might expect. While it hasn’t become integrated into society quite yet, Oculus Rift, the developers behind a next-generation VR headset designed for immersive gaming, have shipped over 50,000 development kits of their hardware. As is natural, other areas of media are being explored with it and today brings a trailer for a film created using the technology.

Zero Point boasts that it’s the first-ever 3D 360-degree movie created for virtual reality. Director Danfung Dennis, who was also behind the Oscar-nominated Hell and Back Again, has formed a company titled Condition One, which has produced this documentary that looks at the history of the technology. Going from military training camps to 3D to Stanford research labs, the film is designed to be watched in 3D with the Rift, but will also be available in other formats later this year, GizMag reports.

While one can see a standard version below, I encourage you to head on over to Reel House to see a (partially) 360-degree version. It’s fairly fascinating to think of the possibilities this technology could bring; it certainly seems to be the next step once we’ve exhausted high resolution and the ilk. Despite how much of a shift Hollywood would need to incorporate this technology into a feature film, I could see someone that has the clout, such as James Cameron, taking this on to bump of the level of immersion when it comes to Avatar 12.

Let us know what you think below, and again, make sure to check out the more accurate version of the presentation here.

Do you think Hollywood can utilize this technology to create a major feature?
