Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and James Gandolfini Make ‘The Drop’ In New Trailer

Written by on June 20, 2014

Containing the final performance of James Gandolfini adds a little bit of unfair pressure on The Drop, a Dennis Lehane-penned crime drama in which he’s only the third-billed star. As also based on the Shutter Island author’s short story, it follows an everyday bartender — one, unlike most, with the extreme benefit of looking exactly like Tom Hardy — whose low-level crime dealings take a turn for the worst.

Holding out hope that its first two trailers are a proper preview, Michaël R. Roskam will have done the great actor justice while satisfying basic needs of this genre. Expertly composed and, from his Bullhead DP Nicolas Karakatsanis, lit with variety and energy, it already seems to make a fine option for that too-tiny sliver between summer spectacle and autumn prestige — a small-scale drama with a bit of bite. Getting Gandolfini‘s final performance should just prove a bittersweet cherry on top.

Watch the new preview below (via Empire):

THE DROP is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award-nominated director of BULLHEAD. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER, GONE BABY GONE), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters – “money drops” – in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost.

The Drop will open on September 19.
