After back-to-back hit YA novel adaptation with Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars, Shailene Woodley is taking on something more up our alley. Teaming with writer-director Gregg Araki, White Bird in a Blizzard premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will now be heading into theaters this fall. Tracking Woodley as a teenager who deals with her mother’s disappearance while coming into her own, the first theatrical trailer has landed today.
We were fans of it at Sundance, saying in our review, it’s a “refreshingly frank coming-of-age story, featuring another great performance from Woodley, whose character embodies a certain maturity that feels opposite of her turn as a naive bystander in last year’s successful Sundance drama The Spectacular Now. If her involvement in a project such as this signals a new direction for the actress, it’s one we’ll gladly welcome.”

Kat Connors (Shailene Woodley) is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother, Eve (Eva Green), a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears – just as Kat is discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, she barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock, (Christopher Meloni) for the loss. In fact, it’s almost a relief. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.
White Bird in a Blizzard hits VOD on September 25th and theaters on October 25th.
