Filmmakers aren’t adverse to portraying their profession in an unflattering light, and Mike Figgis is no exception. Besides the alcoholic, suicidal screenwriter in his Oscar-winning drama Leaving Las Vegas, he also presented very warped views of Hollywood types in his experimental, documentary-style features Timecode and Hotel. He heads back into this territory, only this time with a more conventional eye.

A UK trailer for Figgis’ new film Suspension of Disbelief was released, and it promises a thriller in the tradition of Basic Instinct. Leading man Sebastian Koch (A Good Day to Die Hard) stars as a novelist and screenwriter who begins to question his reality when Therese (Lotte Verbeek), the identical twin sister of his dead lover, appears. The footage borders on sleazy by featuring more than a few titillating, sometimes voyeuristic, moments, but the dark, atmospheric style suggests there’s a worthwhile mystery under all the naked flesh. Synopsis:

In this sexy noir thriller, nothing is quite what it seems as both within and outside of the frame the line between fiction and reality is blurred.

Martin is a talented screenwriter and novelist currently going through a difficult patch in his career. Yet after the death of the mysterious and alluring Angelique and the arrival of her twin sister Therese, Martin’s world starts to change.

He finds himself torn between the similarities in this mystery to the disappearance of his wife 10 years ago (for which he is still a suspect), his daughter’s insecurities around her acting career and the intrigue surrounding Therese’s past.

Suspension of Disbelief is now available on demand in the UK, and arrives on DVD Sept. 9th.
