No one does lame humor like Billy Crystal, as evidenced by his most recent dud, Parental Guidance, which opened to a poor box office draw and mostly dismal reviews (though we gave it some props). But it looks like the comedy veteran and stand-by Oscar host is shifting gears to more daring projects, starting with the ultra-weird comedy, Small Apartments.
Directed by music video helmer Jonas Akerlund, and based on a book by Chris Millis – who also adapted it for the big screen – the SXSW selection stars Matt Lucas (Bridesmaids) as a bald eccentric who accidentally kills his landlord (played by Peter Stormare). In the process of disposing the body, he finds himself surrounded by a series of strange events and odd neighbors. A new trailer for the film features Crystal as an alcoholic fire inspector, but the cavalcade of bizarre appearances doesn’t stop there – check out action star Dolph Lundgren as a motivational speaker with black, plastic-y hair. See trailer below.
Small Apartments also stars Rebel Wilson, Juno Temple, James Caan, Johnny Knoxville, and Rosie Perez. The film receives a limited theatrical release on Feb. 8th.
