Shane Black’s name is not mentioned once in The Predator, he who gave us the franchise’s first entry, Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and, most recently, The Nice Guys relegated to a credit for Iron Man 3 — surely a work that trumps memory of any other noted herein. Nor can we sense a great deal of his ear. New work from the inconsistent but entertaining (and entertainingly inconsistent) auteur du snark is new work, however, and the shape hinted at in this first peek is classic Black. The only thing outright missing is a Christmas setting.

Fox have released the following in advance of a late-summer opening, which one can see below for the film starring Olivia Munn, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Edward James Olmos, Alfie Allen, and Yvonne Strahovski:

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.”

The Predator opens on September 14.
