Red Band Trailer for Paul Feig’s ‘The Heat’ – Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy Get Violent

Written by on December 19, 2012

In directing The Heat, I had (for God knows what reason) thought Paul Feig was playing with a less vulgar script than Bridesmaids, giving him the chance to broaden those commercial horizons with a PG-13 comedy. Needless to say, a sanitized cop comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy was not really on my radar, and, having missed the first trailer, nothing was changing my mind about the idea.

I could be wrong about its eventual rating, but a red band trailer for his buddy cop comedy kind of points toward a more… hard-edged film than my suspicions had conjured. Here we have the rare preview that is as over-the-top as it is funny — which is to say this is pretty great in its own right — so, very quickly am I willing to give this one a shot. I know it’s not high comedy, or anything, but Bullock and McCarthy dropping some guy a couple of stories onto the hood of car hood is, nevertheless, very funny; it may not even be the best part of this trailer.

Watch it below (via IGN):

Uptight and straight-laced, FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence–and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), one of Boston P.D.’s “finest,” is foul-mouthed and has a very short fuse, and uses her gut instinct and street smarts to catch the most elusive criminals. Neither has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. When these two wildly incompatible law officers join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. From Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids.”

With Tony Hale, Bill Burr, Jamie Denbo, Jessica Chaffin, Adam Clark, and Michael McDonald also in the cast, The Heat will open on April 5th, 2013.

In watching this trailer, are your expectations for Feig’s film changed in any way?
