“There’s lots of people who say ‘I discovered McQueen.’ No one discovered Alexander McQueen. Alexander McQueen discovered himself… The darkness created genius.”

Bleecker Street just released the first trailer for Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s debut documentary – simply titled McQueen. The documentary takes a darker look into the mind of an artist, and the brilliance that seemingly comes from within. McQueen was a British fashion designer, most notable for his work with Givenchy, as well as starting his own label.

As the trailer suggests, his inspirations came from violence and unequivocal despair, resulting in consistently controversial fashion sense. The world lost McQueen in February 2010, after found hanging in his London apartment. McQueen promises a retrospective look at the artist’s life work, his impact, and the legacy he left behind.

Check out the trailer below ahead of a July 20th release.
