While most biopics seem to take the standard by-the-numbers approach of capturing the story of their subject, Straight Outta Compton looks to be doing things quite differently. With cinematography by frequent Darren Aronofsky collaborator Matthew Libatique and direction from F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job) we already got a compelling first trailer, and now a new full-length version has arrived.

“I was worried about it at the beginning,” Dr. Dre recently said. “As a matter of fact, I didn’t even wanna do the movie. Cube actually quarterbacked it. He went out and got the first draft of the script done, I read it and was like, OK, we can work with this; we can turn this into something. And then when [director] Gary Gray got on board, that was it. I was in.” It looks like there’s little to be worried about as the trailer sells one of our most-anticipated studio releases of the summer. Check it out below featuring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason MitchellPaul Giamatti and Keith Stanfield, along with a batch of character posters.

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.
