takashi miike Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld

The first peek at Takashi Miike‘s next feature, Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld, was too brief to engender much excitement about any project from a notoriously hit-and-miss artist, but its premise intrigues: the henchman for a vampire Yakuza boss is bit, turned, and sent on the hunt for those who killed his much-respected crime lord. “a feeble but loyal underling to legendary yakuza boss Kamiura, who turns out to be a vampire.” Before the boss is killed by an international assassin, he bites into Kageyama, turning him to the dark side and on the path “to get revenge against a formidable team of assassins.”

This second preview is more my speed. Although I’m not one for the “batshit crazy” fare that so often comprises a midnight-movie marquee, the hints at propulsive, uniquely composed action and cinematographically impressive sights of the Japanese underworld. (Let’s just say that where, how, and why the Why Don’t You Play In Hell?-esque snippet, seen above, appears is part of the mystery.) With any luck, this comes to the U.S. before long.
