One awards contender I’ve lost complete interest in is The Iron Lady. The Margaret Thatcher biopic is directed by Mamma Mia!‘s Phyllida Lloyd and Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent. I’m not a big fan of biopics, and even less so when the performance is praised for being a perfect impersonation and not going outside-the-box (see I’m Not There for an example on how to make it interesting). The subject of the initial and sole female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom doesn’t drum up much desire either. I’m sure Streep will get recognized as she always does, but I won’t mind skipping out on this one. That said, this trailer is the best piece of marketing yet, giving it that stirring, heart-tugging feel that the Weinsteins are aiming for. Check it out below via Apple.

Synopsis:

THE IRON LADY is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.

The Iron Lady hits theaters December 30th, 2011.
