The Wave

The disaster movie is hardly in vogue nowadays, which of course means it’s been some time since destructive giant waves were a major focus of the cinema. If its first reviews are to be believed, The Wave will satiate your thirst and live up to the promise that comes with a giant-wave picture directed by someone named Roar Uthaug. The last point, admittedly, is probably more the result of it being a Norwegian production than divine fate making itself known, but what’s been said in those reactions would indicate that his movie delivers what we’d expect and, if you think these things are worthwhile in the first place, desire.

The first preview falls in line with this rather well: dire discoveries by scientists, animals reacting to the shifting climate, solitary figures noting that something’s wrong, groups of people running, and a massive wave. Here’s hoping Magnolia’s theatrical roll-out will be strong enough to let this be seen on a properly sized screen.

Synopsis:

The experienced geologist Kristian Eikfjord has accepted a job offer out of town. He is getting ready to move from the city of Geiranger with his family when he and his colleagues measure small geological changes in the underground. Kristian gets worried, and his worst nightmare is about to come true when the alarm goes off and the disaster is inevitable. With less than 10 minutes to react, it becomes a race against time to save as many as possible, including his own family.
