After his brother Martin McDonagh delivered the hilarious dark comedy In Bruges, John Michael McDonagh came on the scene with The Guard, a film very much in the same vein that saw the pairing of Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle. A few years after its Sundance Film Festival premiere the writer-director and Gleeson will be returning to Park City with a new project and today brings the first trailer.

Titled Calvary, the film follows Gleeson as Father James, a good man intent on making the world a better place. Suddenly his his life is threatened one day during confession, he finds he has to battle the dark forces closing in around him. The film looks to back the same elements we love about the work of the McDonaghs, so check back for our review from Sundance for the film also starring Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran and Marie-Josée Croz. Check out the trailer below via The Guardian.

Calvary opens in U.K. theaters on April 11th, but doesn’t have U.S. distribution yet.
