For every promising awards contender, there is always a batch of cloying hopefuls that attempt to get into the discussion. With a prime release set for next week, it looks like we have one in the latter category with The Girl. Led by the talented Abbie Cornish (Limitless, Seven Psychopaths), we chimed in with our negative take on the drama back during Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.
Following the story of a single mother and an immigrant she takes in our review we said the film has a lack of emotional impact and it’s a “movie that tries to tackle important, relevant political and social issues by simply bumping into them and thinking that, therefore, something profound is being stated.” The first theatrical has now landed, along with a poster, and it certainly looks like a run-of-the-mill drama. Synopsis:
Struggling with the loss of her child to Social Services, a single mother is trapped in the quicksand of her south Texas life, unwilling to accept the consequences of her actions. When her path collides with a young child from Mexico, she begins a journey that will change her life — teaching her that she is the architect of her own fate and learning what it is that truly defines home.
The Girl opens on December 14th.
