If you’re even the slightest bit familiar with Italy’s Giallo cinema — for the quickest of references: Dario Argento — a number of things are to be recognized in this trailer for The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears. The Amer duo of Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani have taken on the horror subgenre, their homage earning mixed notices since its festival run began nearly a year ago, called stylish and aesthetically decrepit in equal measure. That’s better than unanimous reactions, at least.
The curious can now celebrate: a U.S. release is coming at August’s end, and an official domestic trailer offers plenty to gorge upon for the time being. But does it promise anything significant? I’m certainly intrigued by some sounds and images — heck, even a few combinations of sound and image! — though I have to wonder how much of a difference between successful pastiche and worthwhile incarnation we’ll find here. Perhaps that’ll only be more reason to see it when the time comes.

From directing duo Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani (AMER), comes this homage to the masters of classic Italian Giallo horror. Dan returns home to find his wife is missing. With no signs of struggle or break-in and with no help from the police, Dan’s search for answers leads him down a psychosexual rabbit hole. THE STRANGE COLOR OF YOUR BODY’S TEARS is a bloody and taut fantasia of suspense that leaves the viewer entranced in this highly original erotic thriller.
The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears will enter limited release on August 29.
Does this first trailer point toward a proper Giallo picture?
