How often does this happen: Saturday Night Live member Taran Killam, perhaps best-known for his on-air impersonations of Brad Pitt, has been cast in a movie that’s both produced by and features… Brad Pitt. Deadline pegs him as the next player aboard Twelve Years a Slave, the Steve McQueen-directed Solomon Northup film which, up to now, has compiled an impressive cast comprised of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Pitt, Paul Dano, Adepero Oduye (Pariah), Ruth Negga, and Scott McNairy.
This move goes hand-in-hand with our last update on the film, in which it was reported that McNairy has been signed as one of Northup’s kidnappers, who sell him to a southern slave plantation; as it were, Killam has been locked to play the “traveling showman” responsible for the actual, physical act. It’s a much darker role than any work on his current repertoire, but that should only help to make his scenes — ones I initially expect to be fantastic — all the more interesting. And if he gets to appear onscreen with Pitt, we can only hope McQueen brings out his humorous side and lets some impersonations commence.
It probably won’t happen, though you can watch an example of that below:
Deadline has also learned that comedian Kevin Hart (Think Like a Man) is the favorite to co-star with Kevin James in Valet Guys, a comedy from (oh, who else?) Sony that will shoot later this year. No director has been attached just yet; is Dennis Dugan in his office today?
James and Nick Bakay wrote the screenplay, which revolves around two valet men — one of whom was originally going to be played by Adam Sandler — that get involved in some zany crime antics when they’re forced to recover a stolen car. (Sadly, the mention of “murder” probably doesn’t directly involve their characters.) I am glad to see a funny, talented performer, like Hart, get a big role in what’s bound to be a relatively successful comedy — but I would have preferred if it didn’t happen like this. With any luck, it could land him a solo starring role.
Are you more interested in Slave or Valet Guys? Give this one a second to decide.
