Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo Circling M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘After Earth’

Written by on December 5, 2011

From Hollywood, THR is reporting that Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo are currently in talks to board After Earth, the new film from M. Night Shyamalan. Big roles, too; Kravitz would join the project as the daughter of Will Smith‘s character, while Okonedo would be playing his wife. (As it so happens, one of the latter’s biggest films is The Secret Life of Bees, a project Smith was a producer on.)

Also starring Jaden Smith, the film — which has seen script work from Gary Whitta, Stephen Gaghan, and Shyamalan himself — follows a father and son, played here by the two Smiths, who crash on the planet Earth in the future. With the elder injured, the son is forced to “find help in what is now a strange and dangerous place.”

Though I don’t feel particularly strong about either actress, I can’t say they’d be poor choices. Really, their casting would only add some interest to a project that’s already earned a little confidence from yours truly, mostly thanks to the aforementioned Gaghan polish. Naturally, I’m still ambivalent about getting anticipated over another Shyamalan feature — we’ve learned our lesson a few times too many — but a respectable cast and talented names on the script never hurt anybody, right? That is, of course, barring the fact that Shyamalan‘s attachment as a director has done so in the past, but I’m one to believe in second (third, fourth, fifth) chances.

After Earth is set to commence filming early next year, with a release date of June 7th, 2013 already set.

Would the participation of either actress leave you more interested in what After Earth might bring?
