Watch: ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Behind-the-Scenes Featurette Reveals Orlando Bloom & Evangeline Lilly

Written by on April 1, 2013

Sure, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey killed a wealth of potential investment in Peter Jackson‘s new trilogy — considering what audiences were handed over 165 minutes, also for completely fair reasons — but a collective shrug from the moviegoing world is not nearly enough to halt a money-making Tolkien machine. So, although you may ask yourself why they’d even continue with what, so far, looks to be a distended mess of confused intention, the writer-director has been chipping away at his second (fifth?) installment, subtitled The Desolation of Smaug, and is starting to let us in on the process.

Promoting the film via some lengthy, internet-powered Q & A session — provided in full to those who bought An Unexpected Journey on home video — Jackson let slip some behind-the-scenes footage from the sequel. Along with some of the typical, expected stuff — such as shots of Gandalf leading the pack on their merry way — there’s a peek at some new members: Evangeline Lilly (playing an original character, Tauriel) and Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman), along with returning player Orlando Bloom, whose Legolas was stalking around in action before the One Ring even entered the equation. You also get a bit of new information about how this fits into a larger framework, if not as much as you’d like for the series that had an unusual expansion over this summer; much of that is probably too touchy to handle here.

Take a look for yourself:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will open on December 13th.

Any reaction to this footage? After last year’s installment, what do you think of taking another trip to Middle-earth?
