Wachowskis’ ‘Jupiter Ascending’ Moves Forward With Warner Bros. For Spring 2012 Start

Written by on October 20, 2011

We had heard in late June that the Wachowski siblings would be following the currently-shooting Cloud Atlas with Jupiter Rising, their first “solo” project since 2008’s Speed Racer. Apropos for the duo, valuable information on the film was virtually non-existent, with the exception of it being a “priority project” that was “being prepped as quickly as possible” by Warner Bros.

My memory of it’s been refreshed by Deadline, who report that the studio is officially moving forward on the project. Now called Jupiter Ascending, “their first major science fiction action franchise play” since the Matrix trilogy ended eight years ago, it’s slated to begin shooting this spring. In a somewhat less opaque area of this production, Warner Bros. is currently “discussing which A-list star to lead the cast” — but even that isn’t a clear matter. This is a secretive film, if you don’t realize.

No matter the specifics, I’m definitely intrigued. Although the Wachowkis have stumbled since the first Matrix to varying degrees, dealing with an original property could take them far. (Look at it like this: Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions were studio-mandated sequels that were shot back to back — never a good creative choice — and Speed Racer is, no matter what you think of the film, a vanity project. It didn’t work for me.) Maybe the real sign will come from working with Tom Tykwer on Cloud Atlas; they’re only directing about half of that film, but it should let them have some more freedom while adhering to the material of someone else. In the meantime, let’s all try and figure out what the hell Jupiter Ascending might be. I’m still hoping it’s Cobalt Neutral 9.

Are you curious about Jupiter Ascending? Or does the Wachowskis’ previous track record throw you off?
