At first glance, it was surprising that Warner Bros. was even going ahead with a sequel to its 2010 action blockbuster Clash of the Titans. Louis Leterrier‘s Gods vs. warriors film was plagued by generally bad buzz and a hasty post-conversion that only deteriorated the experience. But with a worldwide box-office take of almost $500 million, a sequel was put into production rather quickly. Wrath of the Titans is indeed coming this March from Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman and now we have news on possible third film.

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Dan Mazeau and David Johnson, co-writers on the upcoming 2012 film with Steven Knight, have been hired to write a treatment. No deals have been signed but the original producing team would be back, as would Liebesman. There is even word on a specific character we haven’t seen yet that could have a prominent word. Consider this a spoiler warning, as we now know he won’t perish in the upcoming sequel.

Toby Kebbell, the most memorable character of Guy Ritchie‘s RocknRolla, hasn’t had much luck with other blockbusters like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. But he’ll be seen in War Horse this year and as Agenor, demigod son to Poseidon, played by Danny Huston (who will hopefully sneak into more than a few frames this time around).

There is word that he could figure into this third film in some larger capacity. For now, check out the official synopsis of the second film below, which includes Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, as well as Edgar Ramirez (Carlos!), Rosamund Pike and Bill Nighy.

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus-the demigod son of Zeus-is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

When it comes to the screenwriters, the sequel will be Mazeau’s first feature credit, although he also worked on The Flash and Jonny Quest feature adaptations. Johnson has less-than-stellar work with The Orphan and last year’s Red Riding Hood. As someone who thought Clash of the Titan‘s stand-out quality was the dull factor, my interest for this is low unless Liebesman pulls some tricks out of his sleeve. Although it may be a disaster, I’m actually anticipating next week’s Immortals moreso due to Tarsem‘s keen visual eye.

Wrath of the Titans hits theaters March 30th, 2012.
