‘The Gangster Squad’ Hitting One Week Earlier; ‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ and ‘Bernie’ Get Dates

Written by on February 17, 2012

In the grand scheme of our universe and its ever-expanding, all-encompassing nature, any movie hitting one week earlier doesn’t amount to a whole lot. Such is my muted reaction to the news that Ruben Fleischer‘s The Gangster Squad has been bumped back from October 19th to October 12th, possibly all as a means of avoiding the box office juggernaut that Paranormal Activity 4 is sure to end up being.

In its new slot, the movie now has to compete with the Kevin James-starrer Here Comes the Boom, Josh Schwartz‘s Fun Size, and the Jason Statham vehicle Parker. Two out of those three could pose some sort of threat, though The Gangster Squad seems to be catering toward an audience separate from any of those three. No matter what, I know which one I’ll be seeing.

Some smaller pictures got down to the business of locking in their dates, too — those being Richard Linklater‘s Bernie, starring Jack Black, and the Bill Murray-led FDR biopic Hyde Park on Hudson. The former will be hitting on April 27th from Millennium Entertainment, in what I imagine is a very limited capacity. (The supposedly dark nature of the story and a number of middling reviews from last year’s LAFF don’t do it many favors.)

But Hudson will have to wait a fair while longer; Focus has set it for a release on December 7th, clearly positioning this as an awards contender for the studio and its involved talent. In one respect, that’s a good sign for someone like myself — I really want to see this, and it’d be a bummer if it’s slack — but, as I’m sure you can understand, the move from a perceived summer opening to the year’s end is disappointing. If it means we can expect even greater things from the likes of Laura Linney, Olivia Williams, Olivia Colman, Samuel West, and director Roger Michell, however, I’ll be willing to suck it up.

Do any of these changes or set dates make you react in any strong way?
