Terrence Malick's Next Film To Start Production In September; ‘Tree of Life’ Remains a Mystery

Written by on August 30, 2010

Being one of the most elusive filmmakers working today, Terrence Malick is able to attract attention when he announces a new film. In 37 years he’s only released four films, with his fifth, The Tree of Life, supposedly coming out this year. The fact that it hasn’t yet been released is why it’s so surprising that he’s already announced work on a new film, with a main cast hired, and, according to Tulsa World (via /Film), auditions have already been held, and filming may begin in September.

The report says that the “romantic drama” will begin filming in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in September, and that the cast of Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz, and Olga Kurylenko will be headlining the film. Affleck replaced Christian Bale, who dropped out of the project recently. The film’s producer, Nicolas Gonda, recently attended a community forum to discuss filming in the town. Other than that, there aren’t any other updates on this film or the hopefully forthcoming The Tree of Life.

What do you think of Malick shooting a new film so soon after his last, and do you think we’ll see The Tree of Life this year?
