Although he’s mostly resigned to the latest geriatric action feature Sylvester Stallone does get around to the independent scene once in awhile and Variety has news on such an occasion. The trade reports that the actor has linked up with his Cobra co-star John Herzfeld, who is directing a drama titled Reach Me. He’s already completed his supporting role, which sees him alongside such talent as Nelly (yes, that Nelly), Omari Hardwick, Elizabeth Henstridge, Danny Aiello and Rebekah Chaney. The story will follow strangers who are all connected to a former football coach’s self-help book. While Herzfeld’s last project, The Death and Life of Bobby Z, didn’t go much of anywhere, hopefully the fate of his latest is better. Regardless how it ends up, it’s nice to see Stallone outside of his usual box, hopefully without a gun this time around.
In other indie drama news, Deadline reports that Akeelah and the Bee writer and director Doug Atchison has found his next project in the form of a hockey film. Titled Turk, the project will follow Boston Bruins’ former player Derek “Turk” Sanderson, who was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup in the ’70s. While the main lead has yet to be cast, Edward Burns has been added his father and will also be co-producer on the project. Filming kicks off in Boston next year, so expect more news soon.
