In a world where it took five years for Paul Thomas Anderson to follow up There Will Be Blood, it’s hard to believe just how fast his latest film is coming together. Following The Master’s release last fall, the filmmaker is ready to go into production on his next work, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon‘s Inherent Vice, and we’ve got another casting update today.

Following the eclectic line-up of Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Martin Short and Kevin O’Connor, Cigs & Red Vines has news on perhaps the biggest star to join the film yet. While not confirmed yet, sources say that Sean Penn is circling a role in the project and the PTA-dedicated site believes it could be that of Adrian Prussia, described as “a powerful loan shark known to get violent when not compensated properly.”

For those not keeping tabs, the film follows Phoenix as Larry “Doc” Sportello, a pot-smoking detective on a kidnapping case in 1970′s Los Angeles. Regardless if talks go through or not (why wouldn’t you join a PTA film?), Anderson is concocting an ensemble that rivals some of his best work. With many more supporting characters to fill out, expect casting all the way up to production and judging from who has joined thus far, we’re bound to be surprised each step of the way.
