Rachel Weisz Considered For ‘The Thin Man’ Remake With Johnny Depp

Written by on May 11, 2011

It seems like Rachel Weisz is all over the place these days, as we’ve heard that she might play one of the witches in Oz: The Great and Powerful, and has been rumored for the female lead in The Bourne Legacy. Now, it’s said that she could show up in another reboot, the Rob Marshall-directed, Johnny Depp-starring The Thin Man.

CinemaBlend says that the British actress is on the Warner Bros. wishlist for the role of Nora Charles, husband to Depp‘s Nick Charles. The character was played by Myrna Loy in the classic 1931 film, and is Nick’s partner in crime-solving. In the original movie, they take on a case of Nick’s friend, Clyde Wynant, who is suspected of murder following his disappearance after his girlfriend’s death.

The new version, which is being scripted by Bad Boys II co-writer Jerry Stahl, will apparently keep the period of the original, but will also have a “contemporary feel.” Weisz and Depp could pull off not just being a couple, but also coming across as people from that time period. There’s also the possibility that this would be a franchise, as the original spawned five sequels. Depp is a franchise-friendly actor, but is she? I can’t say for sure.

I’m not all that ecstatic about the idea of the movie itself, but the casting of Weisz would give me some hope for the eventual product. She’s someone who we haven’t seen all that much of over the past couple of years, mostly taking on parts in smaller films, but it seems like she’ll be jumping back into the spotlight pretty soon. If a remake of The Thin Man is one of the things that will help her get people’s attention again, so be it.
