Australia will soon welcome back some of its top stars when Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving return to their homeland to shoot an indie feature.
According to THR, the three actors boarded Strangerland, a mystery thriller focused around the country’s Outback. Directed by Kim Farrant, and based on a script by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons, the film follows couple Catherine and Matthew Parker, whose marriage is “pushed to the brink when their two teenage children disappear into the remote Australian desert and they are forced to confront the mystery of their children’s fate.” Dragonfly Pictures and Fastnet Films will produce the project, which was recently greenlit by Screen Australia.
Based on the description, the film bares some resemblance to A Cry in the Dark, the 1988 Aussie courtroom drama that stars Meryl Streep and Sam Neill as parents wrongly tried for the murder of their infant daughter (it’s best remembered for the misquoted line “The dingo ate my baby!”). Both films deal with lost children and tested relationships, but I get the feeling that Strangerland will supply more suspense with its drama.
It’s still not clear which roles Kidman, Pearce and Weaving will play in the film, but those details should surface soon.
