On a steep decline since his tense, submarine war drama U-571, director Jonathan Mostow has delivered one subpar Terminator film and the dire Bruce Willis actioner Surrogates. The helmer is back though, will news from Cannes regarding a new thriller that is already set to begin production this summer, featuring two solid actresses.

A press release reveals that Mostow will direct Still of Night, from a script he wrote by himself. Joining the film are Susan Sarandon and the always delightful Michelle Monaghan. Described as a “smart, stylish ride packed with shocking twists that will give you nightmares,” one can read a description of the “paranoia thriller” below.

Katie Tyler (Michelle Monaghan) is an aspiring career woman with everything finally falling into place…until her sister Gwen disappears. Fully aware of Gwen’s tainted past and suddenly left to take care of her young daughter, Katie sets out determined to bring her back. But as she traces Gwen’s last whereabouts, Katie begins to suspect foul play, and soon finds herself tangled in the midst of a dangerous conspiracy with cruel and inhumane consequences. Trapped and running out of time, Katie must outwit a devious criminal (Susan Sarandon) to save herself and her sister – before it’s too late.

It sounds like your fairly generic thriller, but hopefully the caliber of acting talent involved will elevate it. While Monaghan hasn’t quite lived up to her great role in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, my hope is this project falls more on the fun side like Source Code and Mission: Impossible III, rather than something like Eagle Eye. As for Sarandon, she’s been going through the motions a bit in her roles, and while Mostow’s involvement doesn’t give me confidence, I hope he has created a role worthy for her.

Production begins this August for a likely 2013 release.
