Michael Fassbender to Possibly Star in ‘Genius’ with Sean Penn

Written by on January 7, 2011

In addition to having an enormous amount of talent, Michael Fassbender isn’t slowing down when it comes to choosing projects. He has X-Men: First Class and David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method coming around this year, along with Soderbergh’s actioner Haywire and his reteaming with Hunger’s Steve McQueen for Shame. According to ThePlaylist (via CinemaBlend) he’ll possibly be adding to this fairly strong list of projects with Genius.

The story of Max Perkins – and an adaptation of A. Scott Berg’s book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius – he was an editor for Scribner’s who worked on the novels of legendary authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. Scripted by Gladiator and The Aviator‘s John Logan and set to be directed by Bill Pohlad, no start date has been given for production, but when the actors are locked in I imagine it’ll start fairly soon. The main part wouldn’t go to Fassbender but likely Sean Penn, who has been rumored, although not confirmed for the role since summer. The role our newly-rumored lead would take on hasn’t been clarified, although when you consider that the story focuses on the battles him and Wolfe had over his first and second novels, it wouldn’t be a huge shock to learn he’s circling that role.

The two clashed over the length of his first book Look, Homeward Angel, when Perkins wanted him to cut 90,000 words from the novel, and fought once again when his second novel came out, the latter of which lasted for two years.

Fassbender’s work is often terrific, from his stunning performance in Hunger to his small but memorable turn in Inglourious Basterds. I’m a big fan, and he’s certainly someone who deserves to become a big star. While the films he has on the way this coming year, this project sounds like that it would not only further this recognition, but it could prove to be a compelling drama. And with these two great actors in the lead, I would be happy to see it come together.

Would you want to have Fassbender star alongside Penn, and does this sound compelling to you?
