Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf Finally Provide A Reason To Care About The ‘Transformers’ Franchise

Written by on June 11, 2011

Whether you like it or not, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is going to be dominating the box office when this month reaches its end, and Paramount will (naturally) want another installment in the cash cow of a movie series. How instrumental Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf are to its success might end up being something of a litmus test for the franchise, as the actor told MTV (via CinemaBlend) that both he and the director probably won’t stick around after the third installment is released.

As he told them, he’s “not coming back to do another one,” adding that he doesn’t “think Mike will either.” Not that he thinks that Paramount will just let go of the franchise without the two of them in two; acknowledging that it’s “a hot property,” he thinks that the studio will simply “reboot it at some point with someone else.” Being the gentleman that he is, he said that not only will he enjoy a new movie without the two of them, but he’ll “go see it opening night.” I imagine he’d be invited to the premiere, considering his fame, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I don’t see them going in the reboot direction — no matter what you think of these movies, you have to acknowledge that they don’t put character or story above special effects and spectacle. Because of that, I think they’ll simply keep the same robots and events of the first three in the continuity – but new leads will be introduced – while someone like John Turturro might stick around as a connection between two trilogies (because you know the post-Bay series will be a trilogy). But no matter what they do, it’ll still make a lot of money, and the franchise will continue to live on. As someone who has no personal connection to the series in any way, the removal of the director and lead actor basically means nothing to me. But, if Paramount made some bold choices with the creative talent for the next installment (Gaspar Noé anyone?), you could say I finally have a reason to care about this franchise.

Do you care about Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf leaving the Transformers series behind after Dark of the Moon? Would you be more interested in the franchise with other people behind it?
