Scoring as big a “get” as current French cinema might permit, Variety report that actress-helmer Nicole Garcia will soon direct Marion Cotillard in Mal de Pierres. Adapted from a novel by Milena Agus, the post-WWII tale chronicles the 20-year struggle of a woman whose troubled marriage inhibits her “passionate, free-spirited” state of being; some freedom arrives, however, upon meeting another man.

Les Productions du Tresor are producing Mal de Pierres, which Garcia is to co-write with Jacques Fieschi.

Also in Variety is an update on the next collaboration from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Though still without a title, their fact-based, Coen-scripted Cold War thriller has found a new star: Mark Rylance, whose filmography — Anonymous, Blitz, The Other Boleyn Girl — is perhaps less impressive than his stage credits, what with a recent Tony win for his work in Twelfth Night.

Expect the batting average to go up a bit here. Details of his role is currently undisclosed, but we do know that Hanks will portray James Donovan, an American attorney who, in the early ’60s, become an integral part of the Cold War when asked by the CIA to cross the Berlin Wall for the rescue of imprisoned U2 pilot Gary Powers. More should become known the closer we get to its fall start.

In THR, there’s word that Sacha Baron Cohen has helped assemble the cast for a spy spoof, Grimsby. First announced in August of 2012, the project’s since been set for the directing talents of Louis Leterrier and leading-man capabilities of Mark Strong; it’s more recently that Ian McShane, Gabourey Sidibe, David Harewood (The Third Person, Homeland), and comedian Johnny Vegas have become tied to the effort.

Peter Baynham (Brüno, Borat) and Phil Johnston (Wreck-It Ralph) co-wrote the project with Cohen, who will play an oafish football (“soccer,” as well call it) star paired with his brother (Strong), a spy made to go into hiding. The brother presumably continues to act like an oaf.

Lastly, TheWrap report that Ice Cube has set his son, Ice Cube J… sorry, O’Shea Jackson Jr., to play himself in the F. Gary Gray-directed Straight Outta Compton. Described by the subject-producer as a “dramatic story that encompasses hip-hop, dope-dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, LAPD, rap feuds, FBI, PMRC, the Parental Advisory stickers on the records… all of it,” it’s scripted by Jonathan Herman and, taking in those many subjects, chronicles the legendary career of NWA.

The rest of the cast may be announced by week’s end, according to the same story, though there have yet to be any leaks as to who might be involved. (The notice that both professionals and “authentic rappers” were auditioned is to be expected.) Despite it being unclear if Universal have actually greenlit the project, one expects the fully stocked project — complete with an already-shot end credits sequence wherein Ice Cube and Dr. Dre discuss the group’s lasting impact — to strike their interest.

Do you anticipate any of the projects noted here? How does the casting seem to be shaking out?
