Lucas Black Adds ‘Promised Land’ and ‘42’; Terrifying Set Photos From Jackie Robinson Biopic Surface

Written by on May 21, 2012

Before we get to the casting items at hand, just you go ahead and look at that freaking image. No, this isn’t from the set of a horror film about a carnival of half-sized amputees; it’s for the biopic of a sports legend. Over at The Birmingham News, we’ve been able to gander at the production of Brian Helgeland‘s 42, which features newcomer Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson, while Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, a large supporting cast of notable character actors, and inflatable people are also making onscreen appearances.

Well, no, not really. The nightmare-inducing creatures are actually being utilized for post-production, a time in which they’ll be replaced by digital figures that should, with any luck, seamlessly integrate with actual humans in the crowd. Although that’s obviously the best course of action for 42, I sort of wish they’d stick with these right up to and past the finish line.

Now that that’s over: Deadline reports that Lucas Black (Friday Night Lights) has joined the film to play Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese, who acted as an outlet of support for Robinson upon his controversial induction into the Los Angeles Dodgers. (If you haven’t been following until now, it’s worth noting that much of the casting on this film has been “baseball player who was a racist” or “baseball player who wasn’t a racist.”) There’s also a role in Promised Land, Gus Van Sant‘s fracking drama led and scripted by Matt Damon & John Krasinski. Here, Black has been cast as a landowner cheated out of his property — almost assuredly by those pesky businessmen who want to extract some natural gas.

Frances McDormand, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Hal Holbrook also star in the film, which is slated to arrive in 2013.

Along with more of those half-sized monstrosities, you can get a few shots of Boseman and, possibly, Beharie, on the 42 set below:

What do you make of these photos? Does it seem as though Black will situate himself into either film with ease?
