Listen to George Miller’s One-Hour Spoiler-Filled Breakdown of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’

Written by on October 15, 2015

Because of the nature of the press circuit, filmmakers can often be tight-lipped regarding certain aspects of their latest work due to not wanting to ruin the element of surprise. Unless they do a director’s commentary, it might be many years before we get a deeper insight into the production. When it comes to the one of the year’s best filmsMad Max: Fury Road, as Warner Bros. begins its awards campaign, George Miller has sat down for an excellent one-hour talk with Empire.

First however, he gave a quick update on the planned sequels — to be shot after he takes on a smaller story — but it likely won’t include the highlight of Fury Road, Charlize Theron‘s Furiosa. Miller tells Digital Spy, “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.” While there’s been a bit of an uproar over the comments, she had a perfect, complete arc in Fury Road, so we look forward to Max’s next encounter.

Back to the conversation, Miller discusses how he believes he made the best film possible from the material looking back. He talks about some of the fan theories (without confirming any), his approach to evolving film language within the action, as well as the various world-building intricacies like the blood bags and the milking mothers. It’s a fascinating talk to witness just how much detail is packed into what we imagine will be considered an action classic in the years to come.
