Although Richard Linklater and Zach Galifianakis had recently angled toward, of all things, a remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet, that project may get pushed back a bit in favor of something altogether different. According to TheWrap, both director and star have snagged Will Ferrell to co-lead Larry’s Kidney, a based-on-true-events comedy that concerns overseas organ trading. Ferrell is set to portray Daniel Asa Rose, who took his “black-sheep cousin,” Larry (Galifianakis), to China (the latter’s mail-order bride tagging along) for the purposes of securing a kidney transplant / opportunity to shoot something in the burgeoning film economy that is China.

Fitting for a Campaign reunion; less fitting as a Boyhood follow-up, though the unexpected is all that’s expected of Linklater by this point. Larry’s Kidney will be backed by Aversano Films, though further details do not currently exist. Likely before then, however, we can expect 21 Years: Richard Linklater, which Screen Daily say was recently acquired by Gravitas Ventures; according to their story, it charts the odd career via “interviews with collaborators and animation provided by Austin-based Powerhouse Animation Studios.” Michael Dunaway and Tara Wood have directed the title.

(Thankfully, that confounding “@” has been removed.) As penned by Demetri Martin and backed by Gary Sanchez Productions, the picture concerns a man (Rudd) whose destiny, like the destiny of all others, is dictated by writers in Heaven; when that writer (Galifianakis) quits, a new life begins.

Paramount have possession of Will, with the title expecting to roll cameras by the end of 2014 or start of 2015.

Another Variety story tells us Gus Van Sant wants Naomi Watts to take the female lead on Sea of Trees, though it sounds as if this is only in the offer stages as of right now. As reported in February, the project concerns “a suicidal American (McConaughey) who befriends a Japanese man (Watanabe) lost in a forest near Mt. Fuji, and the two search for a way out,” during which time they take “a journey of reflection and survival.” (If possible, do not ever Google anything relating to the actual Sea of Trees.)

Chris Sparling (Buried, ATM) has written the screenplay. Bloom and Gil Netter are providing support, hopefully with movement at Cannes.

Jeremy+Irons+Night+Train+Lisbon+Photocall+y7RxKFU1ijglBen Wheatley has found his most intriguing cast yet in High Rise, a J.G. Ballard adaptation that’s just secured the talents of Jeremy Irons and Sienna Miller. In starring alongside Tom Hiddleston, they will, respectively, play an architect and his assistant, the ladder of whom our lead character takes a romantic liking to; he himself is a doctor pulled in by the majesty of a new high-rise apartment complex built in late-70s England, “the site of what will soon become the world’s financial hub.” As with most everything in Margaret Thatcher‘s England, however, it fails, with those inhabiting the space soon battling one another.

Wheatley and his wife / frequent co-scribe, Amy Jump, have scripted an adaptation that will begin shooting in July. HanWay, Jeremy Thomas‘ Recorded Picture Company, the BFI, Film4, and Northern Ireland Screen have given the project their support.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" Los Angeles Premiere - ArrivalsFinally, TheWrap report that Anthony Mackie has entered talks to appear in an untitled Christmas comedy which Jonathan Levine will use to stage a 50/50 reunion for himself, Seth Rogen, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. As details on this role (aside from it being a friend to the other two leads) are yet to arise, it’s best to reiterate that the picture revolves around “three childhood best friends who reunite in New York City for their annual tradition of going on on Christmas Eve,” at which point antics ensue.

Sony are behind the title, and they anticipate for production to commence this summer.

Are you especially encouraged by any of the projects detailed herein? What does the casting do for you?
