Will Sofia Coppola’s next film bring more humor than expected? With her latest casting decision, the answer may be yes. After Emma Watson came aboard to lead, THR reports that Leslie Mann, wife of Judd Apatow and recurring actress in his films, has joined the cast to The Bling Ring, which is based on the true story of Beverly Hills heists.

Also joining Mann are newcomers Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock in the cast which already includes American Horror Story actress Taissa Farmiga. This group will play part of the ring which were involved in the heists, while Mann is mother to two of the kids.

Watson will play leader to the true-life, titular group who “reportedly stole thousands to millions of dollars worth of belongings from celebrities such as Paris HiltonOrlando BloomRachel Bilson and Lindsay Lohan.” Though I imagine certain aspects of this will be fictionalized for the screen version, Coppola is taking her writing cues from Nancy Jo Sales‘ Vanity Fair story, The Suspects Wore Louboutins.

This seems to be different territory for Coppola, with the nature of the plot providing more tension and comedy than she usually injects her films. As for Mann, she’s always played the same sort of motherly role whether it be 17 Again, The Change-Up or any of the Apatow films. This one doesn’t look to be any different, but we’re getting a new Coppola film so it is difficult to complain.

Production begins this spring in Los Angeles for a likely 2013 release.
