Casting for Constantin’s adaptation of Cassandra Clare‘s YA novel Mortal Instruments: City of Bones has recently gained some momentum. A lot of new talent joined leads Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower over the past month, among them Jemima West (who will play Isabelle Lightwood), and Kevin Durand (Cosmopolis) and Robert Maillet (Sherlock Holmes), who both signed on to play a pair of villains. Just last week, Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Jared Harris (Mad Men) and Godfrey Gao also came on board. Now the word is another actor was hired, filling up the teen fantasy’s large roster of characters.

Directed by Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid), Mortal Intruments follows Clary Fray (Collins), an ordinary New York youth who discovers that she’s descended from a secret race of ancient half-angel warriors known as the Shadowhunters. After her mother disappears, she finds other members of this race and they battle all sorts of demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and other bumps in the night. Just Jared (via Cinema Blend) reported that Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl) was cast as Alec, a fellow Shadowhunter and brother to West’s Isabelle. The news puts to rest the rumor that Gabriel Hugoboom (The Glee Project) would fill the role.

Mortal Instruments should arrive in theaters in August 2013.

Have you read Mortal Instruments? Do you think Zegers is a good fit as Alec?
