Writers like Michael Brandt and Derek Haas are some of the hardest to properly judge. Although some of their scripting work — which includes 2 Fast 2 Furious and Wanted — are absolute dreck, those are studio-controlled screenplays based on pre-existing properties — limitations, no doubt. But, when they put out an entertaining, mostly original screenplay such as 3:10 to Yuma, they suddenly don’t seem like complete hacks.
THR tells us that a new screenplay of theirs, Overdrive, has landed Karl Urban and Ben Barnes in the lead roles. They’re taking over for Alex Pettyfer and Matthew Goode, both of whom were at least negotiating in May; THR says that they’ve dropped out since then.
In the film, they’ll appear as “a pair of handsome and adventurous brothers, known for being high-profile car thieves, who travel to the South of France looking for new challenges and come across a tough local crime boss.” Transit and Seconds Apart director Antonio Negret is helming for producer Pierre Morel. The project itself is currently an independent affair, but shooting is scheduled to kick off on October 29th.
Emilia Clarke, who’s done a fantastic job playing Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, is in talks for the female lead; “love interest” is the first term that comes to mind. Should they all come together, that would make a nice trio of actors for what appears to be a fun crime thriller. It appears that way, though, because the scribes’ past credits make me a little ambivalent about jumping on this movie’s bandwagon just yet.
What do you think of Overdrive, based on information that’s been given out? Does this casting do anything for you?
