Justin Timberlake Finds ‘Trouble With the Curve’

Written by on January 31, 2012

It’s in my nature to speak too soon on many things, be they big or small. Here’s a timely case in point of the latter sort: Last night, I made the offhanded comment that Robert Lorenz‘s Clint Eastwood-starrer, Trouble With the Curve, had assembled its main cast. I don’t know, maybe it was the announcement of a release date, a slowness in casting news, or even the seemingly small nature of the picture — but I just said it.

So, as it goes, Variety now reports that a major addition has taken place: Justin Timberlake, who’s coming on board the baseball drama as “Johnny Flanagan, a former pitcher who now works as a baseball scout for the New York Yankees,” one who also happens to be “a potential love interest for [Amy] Adams.” She’s playing the daughter of Eastwood‘s increasingly blind (just go with it) baseball scout, mind you.

The meat of the story (written by Randy Brown) centers around Eastwood‘s character, an old baseball scout who, with his daughter, heads to Atlanta to check out an up-and-comer. Some finer points haven’t been made public, but the icon’s involvement — though it may only be in front of the camera — leaves me anticipating a guitar score, pale cinematography, the silver-tinted WB logo, and a speech from the star about aging. If that’s your thing (it often works for me, actually), this fall should be fun. If not, however, Timberlake should at least add some youthfulness to the proceedings — probably just to get called a sissy — and, as a bonus, it’s nice to see the guy expand his range as a thespian. (Don’t forget the Coen brothersInside Llewyn Davis, guys.)

The rest of the lineup — which I won’t call the main cast — is filled out by Matthew Lillard and Joe Massingill. With all of these talented folks signed, production on this one should get going pretty soon; Trouble With the Curve is set to hit on September 28th.

What do you make of Timberlake starring alongside Eastwood?
