While J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness didn’t pack the same level of brisk, scintillating entertainment as his 2009 feature, I still had a fairly good time with the film — but it’ll likely be the last time we see that director involved with this franchise. As he is hard at work on Star Wars: Episode VII, Paramount is keen on moving forward with a follow-up, considering this summer’s entry hit a franchise-high of nearly $470 million worldwide.

After his name was tossed about in the early days (and he even initially passed), Paramount and Skydance Productions are looking once again to Joe Cornish to direct a third installment. For some reason or another, the Attack the Block director is more keen this time around on the prospect, as he’s entered early talks, but no deals have been offered yet. [The Wrap]

Having proven he can handle the sci-fi genre on a small-scale with his wildly enjoyable first feature, he’s a strong choice for capturing the adventures of Captain Kirk and crew. Cornish is also attached to the ambitious adaptation of Snow Crash, so a studio sequel like this could prove to be beneficial for more experience. With that said, he’s already worked on The Adventures of Tintin‘s script and is currently re-teaming with Edgar Wright on crafting the story of Marvel’s Ant-Man, so he’ s already well aware of Hollywood’s ins and outs.

With production aiming to kick off next summer for Star Trek 3, expect confirmation soon if Cornish is the man for the job.
