alphaville

While Jean-Luc Godard himself continues to stir up controversy at the age of 84, another new development related to his filmography will certainly be a point of contention. Released in 1965, Godard’s futuristic film noir Alphaville is one of his most accomplished films and now, in a twisted 50th anniversary present, it’s set to be remade.

According to the The Wrap, Twin Peaks cinematographer Frank Byers will be directing an update of the film from a script by Franc. Reyes (Empire). Coming from Studiocanal, it’s said to “present a fresh take on the story that aims to reflect what’s happening in today’s political climate.” While that sort of approach is a sign of distress, perhaps we can be pleased it’s not a major studio attempting to pre-package the concept for mass audiences.

I had the opportunity of catching the original during its theatrical run after being recently restored, and it should be of no surprise how well the story of a dystopian metropolis holds up — which is one of the disconcerting aspects of this new venture. Then again, Godard’s Breathless also got the remake treatment, and there seem to be fewer hands involved here. As we await more details, check out the original’s trailer below.

Is any part of this remake a promising idea?
