Hugo Weaving and Rose Byrne Make ‘The Turning’ with Omnibus Film; Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska Still Aboard

Written by on October 31, 2012

No matter how faulty I may find anticipation for an omnibus film, The Turning is getting some personal consideration. Like most films of this sort, I don’t think anyone, from the outset, would be at fault if hopes were only built upon who’s directing. A slew of Australian helmers — Benedict Andrews, Jonathan auf der Heide, Tony Ayres, Shaun Gladwell, Ashlee Page, Stephen Page, Rhys Graham, Justin Kurzel, Ian Meadows, Yaron Lifschitz, and Claire McCarthy — give it a slightly more esoteric twist than your typical [Famous City], I Love You movie, but that wouldn’t even count the chance to see Cate Blanchett, Mia Wasikowska, and David Wenham all try their directing hands for the first time.

All of a sudden, though, we have a good cast to lend The Turning some further credit. According to THR, the American Film Market has secured starring positions for Oz talent such as Hugo Weaving, Rose Byrne, and Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings, War of the Worlds), with the three leading various (if not all) directors’ take on Tim Winton‘s short story collection. Spanning a total of 30 years and 17 stories, Turning focuses on, as its title hints, “the extraordinary turning points in seemingly disparate but connected people’s lives”; so, expect to see them (and their future co-stars) pop up more than once. I think Weaving did something similar not too long ago…

The right kind of people — i.e., those who will bring it to you — have yet to throw their weight behind The Turning, though Arenamedia Australia, Screen Australia, and LevelK will bring it to people at AFM sometime during the week. With all this talent converging into one place, I have trouble imagining some scenario where they go home empty-handed. I don’t like to picture it, either, though that’s a whole different story.

Now that a few actors have been brought on, will you lend a closer eye to The Turning?
