‘Hugo’ Stars Reunite For Terry Gilliam’s ‘The White Circus’

Written by on May 16, 2013

After teaming for Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo a couple of years ago, young stars Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield went their separate ways, jumping aboard major studio films like Carrie, Ender’s Game and more. They are now set to reconvene for a new project, one that has Terry Gilliam involved.

Executive produced by the Brazil helmer, the dark fantasy film is titled The White Circus and will mark the directorial debut of Canadian directors Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, according to Variety. Described as a romantic adventure set on New Year’s Eve, we follow a young pilot who crashes “his plane into a war-torn town on his first mission. There, he falls in love with a beautiful cabaret singer, befriends a talking circus bear and incites the townsfolk to liberate themselves from a despot.”

There’s no word yet on the roles of Moretz and Butterfield, but they’ll be joined by Andrea Riseborough and Christian Friedel and production kicks off in Germany and Serbia early next year. Check out the directors’ animated short Madame Tutli-Putli below, which was nominated for an Oscar five years ago, as well as their Spike Jonze-produced adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Higglety Pigglety Pop, featuring Meryl Streep.
