‘Haywire’ Star Gina Carano Will Lead Pack of Expendable Females

Written by on September 24, 2012

The risky choice of Gina Carano as Haywire‘s star is beginning to pay off. The MMA fighter-turned-actress will, in short order, be making turns in Fast Six and another starring vehicle, In the Blood; now, there’s an extra special something coming down the pipeline.

Variety reports that Carano, fulfilling a little prediction of our own, is expected to topline the female Expendables riff which has been popping up in the news as of late. There’s something to be said for the fact that she’s a first choice — e.g., “look at that ascendancy” — though I think it’s enough, knowing that they plan to have Carano star with the ranks of who, now, are only described as “several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre.” (Michelle Rodriguez, another person we had picked, is almost bound to be in there.) Producer Adi Shankar is rather enthusiastic about the move, opining that not having her on board is “like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.”

I wouldn’t go that far when espousing kind words, myself, though I do think she’s a fairly wise person with whom to kick off the proceedings — and while I don’t necessarily “care” about what might come from this action yarn, I’m honestly a bit interested in learning who’ll end up being in the same ranks. No, I don’t even know why.

Is Carano right to establish this potential new franchise?
