Considering how his version of The Hobbit never saw the light of day and intriguing projects like At the Mountains of Madness never came to fruition, it was a bit disappointing when Guillermo del Toro‘s latest film, the entertaining gothic horror/romance Crimson Peak, failed to truly connect with audiences. Perhaps as a response, with Pacific Rim 2 shelved, he’s now looking to direct something with a wider appeal.

According to THR, he’s in talks to helm a James Cameron-produced remake of the 1966 sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage. The original revolved around a team of scientists who are shrunk to atomic size and sent on a miniature submarine to save the life of a defecting Soviet scientist. The story then followed the biological adventures the team encounters in trying to save the scientist and themselves.

It’s quite the long-gestating project, having been in the hands of Paul Greengrass, Shawn Levy and more, but now 20th Century Fox looks to have settled on their director if talks go through. Scripted by David Goyer, it would be a reteam for the duo after Blade 2 in what is said to be “an event-sized tentpole for the studio.” Although no release date has been set yet, check back for updates and see the trailer for the original below, along with a talk between the director and Ryan Gosling at SXSW last year.
