[First Look] Orlando Bloom as Legolas In ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again’; New Clip from ‘An Unexpected Journey’

Written by on December 6, 2012

Sit on this madness for a second: the first Hobbit film, a.k.a. An Unexpected Journey, will not be opening for eight more days — yet here we are, posting a photo from the second sequel to that film. One which, itself, does not open until the summer of 2014.

Up above, you can see the EW-provided photo of Orlando Bloom reprising Legolas, who, it turns out, had far bluer eyes when he was a younger elf. Standing next to him is one of the Tolkien book’s more famous characters, Bard the Bowman, whose actions toward the end of that story are among the most thrilling in the entire Middle-earth saga; it makes sense that we’d get more of him onscreen, then, particularly when his presence there is a little small to begin with. Co-writer and producer Philippa Boyens explains his presence in this series — beginning with the second movie, The Desolation of Smaug — by saying they’ll “take more time introducing him,” partially by exploring his time as a father. Maybe that’s why it’ll be three hours long once again.

There’s also a new clip from An Unexpected Journey, wherein Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Saruman (Christopher Lee), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), and Elrond (Hugo Weaving) discuss the dangers of Smaug. This isn’t in 48fps, but it’ll do (via HeroComplex):

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on December 14th, while The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit on July 18th, 2014.

Is it nice to see Legolas once again? What do you make of the clip?
