[First Look] Bradley Cooper and Co-Stars In ‘Silver Linings Playbook’; Helena Bonham Carter in ‘Great Expectations’

Written by on November 6, 2011

David O. Russell had a six-year gap between I ♥ Huckabees and The Fighter; this makes it a little weird to see pictures from his follow-up to last year’s Best Picture nominee, but I’m not complaining. Coming from the American Film Market (via Collider), we have our first look at The Silver Linings Playbook, which stars Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jacki Weaver. They manage to give us a look at everyone listed above, minus Lawrence.

Read a full synopsis here:

“Pat Peoples (Bradley Cooper) is a man always trying to look on the bright side of life – the title of the story takes it’s name from the expression that “every cloud has a silver lining.” Released from the hospital after losing his wife to another man, Pat believes this age-old adage is just the ticket to trying to win her back and get his life on track. Trying to remain resolutely undiscouraged, Pat moves back in with his parents and devotes himself entirely to becoming the man his wife always wanted him to be. But it’s an uphill battle. Until Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a beautiful young woman whose life also has not turned out the way she wanted. Together, the couple will try and navigate through their lives and stay true to who they are, always just one adventure away from a unique friendship, and possibly even love.”

What you’re mostly getting here is a peek at how these actors will look in the film — Cooper is doing his best Oscar Isaac impersonation, Weaver appears much less battered than in Animal Kingdom, and De Niro looks like De Niro. Though it’s very little, I have to admit that seeing these is already getting me excited for the drama, expected to open in late 2012. One is above, and the rest can be seen below:

After that, shots from Great Expectations, Mike Newell‘s film adaptation of the beloved Charles Dickens novel, have come in from Deadline. The cast is something to consider — Jeremy Irvine, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Holiday Grainger, and Jason Flemyng are leading. And, of course, this is based on a Dickens work. Not a bad place to start.

These only show Carter, who plays the villainous Miss Havisham. Some will be surprised at how ancient she looks in these pictures, but the character was described as having such an appearance in the original novel, despite being in her fifties. Taking only the pictures into account, I’m not swayed either way here, but an interest already exists on my part; maybe I don’t need much else. If you really want something to chew on, there seems to be some nice lighting and period design — but there isn’t much else to ponder.

Does either set of photos impress you? Are you looking forward to these films?
