[First Look] Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg Stride In ‘2 Guns’

Written by on January 25, 2013

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg feel like a particularly unusual balance to strike onscreen. They’re often at different pitches, run at different speeds, and focus on different types of projects when their schedules become open. Now, however, they’re coming together in a film that sounds to be more of the latter’s speed: 2 Guns, an actioner from Contraband director Baltasar Kormákur. Our first look at the two in action, seen above (via JoBlo), shows them striding down the road with money flying around on the periphery above.

It tells us nothing, but this synopsis of the graphic novel upon which 2 Guns is based — the script is from Blake Masters — fills out more of the details:

“A pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it’s a great way to score — considering it’s a cover for mob money. They’ll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn’t know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn’t know is that Steadman’s a Naval Intelligence officer. They’re both cops! And neither one knows that they’re not robbing the mob, they’ve been set up to steal $50 million from the CIA!”

The film also stars Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, and Edward James Olmos, with a release date set of August 16th.

Smaller (but no less worse) is our first shot from The Purge, itself an excuse to check out Ethan Hawke wielding a baseball bat against futuristic criminals. Revealed in November, the James DeMonaco-helmed, Platinum Dunes-produced “speculative thriller” about a husband and wife (the latter played by Lena Headey) who come under attack when the government issues their yearly allowance of murder. (In all the times I’ve read this over, it’s never been clear why that would happen, except “dystopias.”) In the sequence from which this image is taken, we can presume he’s about to fend off an invader.

The Purge will open on May 31st, 2013. You can see the image below (via JoBlo):

Which image is more promising? Can any of these be entirely “promising,” since it’s so early?
